HAITI “CARNIVAL OF FLOWERS”

Tens of thousands of revelers turned the heart of Haiti’s capital into a colorful party for the second “Carnival of Flowers” in Port-au-Prince.Parade goers donned colorful costumes as they danced through the streets, while musicians played the Caribbean country’s flowing rhythms.The festival included street theater such as one piece involving a man dressed as Haitian national hero Jean-Jacques Dessalines laid out in his coffin.The celebration is not without criticism. A few hundred protesters marched in Port-au-Prince last week, saying the $2.2 million budgeted for the festival would have been better spent elsewhere. Officials counter that the event is employing more than 1,500 people as makeup artists, dancers and caterers.

PULSE’S CARIBBEAN FASHION WEEK is one of the premier events to look forward to each year. CFW is an annual showcase that features some of the best designers and their upcoming work for the year. Some 50 designers hail from over 20 different countries to attend.

CFW has developed into a large part of Caribbean Fashion. It’s received worldwide recognition, and some of its designers have went on to be featured in Vogue and The New York Times. There have been over 100 designers who have shown their collections in the past years.

A celebrated Jamaican fashion line this summer is the new swimwear collection from Jae Jolly called Ocean Floor. It is a trendy line featuring mixed prints, high slits, teeny bikinis and bold colors.

In just a few short years, beauty queen and model-turned-businesswoman and journalist LEAH MARVILLE has used her brains and beauty to become one of the most recognizable and powerful female faces on Barbados. Marvel now owns the Miss Barbados World franchise, a competition she competed in and won in 2009, leading to her being named Miss Caribbean at the Miss World pageant.

When you’ve got skin and cheekbones like model LENE HALL, the cosmetics brands come calling. The face of Prescriptive by Esteé Lauder has also been featured in campaigns by Noxzema and Lubriderm, and appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Spanish Vogue, Elle, Oprah, Marie Claire, and Essence. Franc (her father is Bajan, her mother is British) had a No. 1 dance hit in 2009 in “Now I’m That Bitch” with Pitbull.
